Int 3 for Programmers

Domains, intervals and piecewise values by hand

Medium0 of 20 parts

Every answer here is a single number, so type the number and nothing else. Where a question asks for the left end of an interval, give the number at that end, not the bracket.

Two habits carry most of these. A square root needs whatever is under it to be 0 or more. A fraction needs its bottom to be anything except 0.

1

The domain of f(x)=x−5f(x) = \sqrt{x - 5} is a single interval. Give the number at its left end.

2

The domain of f(x)=2x−8f(x) = \sqrt{2x - 8} is a single interval. Give the number at its left end.

3

How many separate intervals does the domain of g(x)=1x2−9g(x) = \dfrac{1}{x^2 - 9} need?

4

Give the larger of the two inputs missing from the domain of h(x)=x+1x2−4h(x) = \dfrac{x + 1}{x^2 - 4}.

5

With f(x)=3xf(x) = 3x and g(x)=x−7g(x) = x - 7, which single input is missing from the domain of fg\dfrac{f}{g}?

6

With f(x)=x−4f(x) = \sqrt{x - 4} and g(x)=x+1g(x) = x + 1, the domain of f∘gf \circ g is a single interval. Give the number at its left end.

7

With f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x} and g(x)=x−10g(x) = x - 10, the domain of f∘gf \circ g is a single interval. Give the number at its left end.

8

With f(x)=1xf(x) = \dfrac{1}{x} and g(x)=x−6g(x) = x - 6, which single input is missing from the domain of f∘gf \circ g?

9

ff has domain [2,∞)[2, \infty) and gg has domain (−∞,6](-\infty, 6]. The domain of fgfg is [2,b][2, b]. Give bb.

10

The domain of f(x)=x+1x−2f(x) = \sqrt{x} + \dfrac{1}{x - 2} starts at one number and has one number removed from it. Give the number that is removed.

11

For the rule that is 2x+32x + 3 when x<1x < 1 and x2x^2 when x≥1x \ge 1, find f(1)f(1).

12

For that same rule, find f(0.5)f(0.5).
